'Fastest Wiener in the West' Won by Belmont Shore Doxie at Nationals

By Nancy Wride

Belmont Shore dachshund Buddy Black ripped up the Los Alamitos Race Track Saturday night, winning 'Fastest Wiener in the West' at the 18th annual Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals.

Not only did this local "doxie" win the title before a cheering crowd of about 8,000 people, he got a $1,000 cash prize and a dog house that resembles one of the chain's restaurants (pointy red roof, as you may recall, and we hope its a double-wide).

Owned by David and Shawn Black of Belmont Shore in Long Beach, Buddy Black was stylish from beginning to end - all seven seconds of it - as the 4-year-old low-riding male won the speedy race.

"We had tried both in 2011 and 2012," Shawn Black said Sunday. "This was his breakthrough year! We trained him at Rosie's Dog Beach with a custom made racing box to get him in shape .... We are so very proud of him."

Looking sharp as he raced in a little red-cap, though he is missing it in this photo, Buddy Black graduated to the championship level with a solid victory in the 50-yard dog dash to earn the title of the 'Fastest Wiener In The West.'

The Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals is a popular fundraiser that benefits the Seal Beach Animal Care Center. Over the years, the Wiener Nationals has raised over $220,000 for the SBACC.
