National Bike to Work Day is part of a month-long celebration of cycling. Long Beach has been called one of the most bike friendly cities in the U.S.
For most of us, slogging through traffic is just part of the work-week routine. But if you live close enough to consider biking, Friday is your day. And in Long Beach, it is much easier than it is in other cities. May 18 is National Bike to Work Day, a push that encourages biking as a way to save time, money and the environment. The day is part of a month-wide celebration, Bike to Work Month. According to the League of American Bicyclists, California is the 20th most bicycle-friendly state in the U.S. Washington State is No. 1. But Long Beach has been upgraded to a “Silver Bicycle Friendly City” by the League of American Bicyclists. This award puts the City of Long Beach in a select group of cities across the nation; only five other cities…

The Native Sun continues with great twilight action for sand bass and sculpin while surf fisherman Tim Rand catches halibut. Also, a giant basking shark on video.
Great twilight fishing last Saturday night on the Native Sun out of Long Beach Sportfishing as 24 anglers sacked up 75 sand bass and 78 fat sculpin. Rachel Chiu and her husband Kevin brought Kevin’s father all the way from Malaysia to make this trip. They had a ball and even though they didn’t catch a ton of fish, a group of anglers on board donated some fish and sent the trio home with a bountiful seafood feast. The bite turned on around 10 p.m. when the vast majority of the fish were caught. Once again, a two-ounce leadhead tipped with squid was the best way to get a bite. Make sure you check out the attached video to see all the action. Lots of big sculpin and some nice sand bass made for some of the best surface action of the weekend. …

Plus: Anglers on the Toronado are greeted with gunfire and booms near San Clemente Island.
edited Southern California anglers continue to experience good rockfishing as they await the beginning of this year's surface fishing season. There have been some encouraging signs south of the border, as well as improving conditions in our local waters. Ensenada Capt. Mike Slater reported good barracuda fishing on Wednesday near Todos Santos Island in Ensenada, Baja California. The toothy critters were being taken on blue and white lures. The captain of the Gamefisher Ensenada also said there were good schools of 15- to 20-pound yellowtail, but very few of the yellowtail were caught. San Diego A few 18- to 25-pound yellowtail were being taken daily around the Coronado Islands and La Jolla. You see a lot more fish than you catch, which is …

Steve Pendarvis, shaper of Pendoflex, talks about his unique approach to the art of custom surfboards.
Editor's Note: I really liked this Q and A with this board shaper so I asked the Imperial Beach Patch editor if I could share it with our local readers. Anyone who surfs the reefs and beaches of central San Diego has come across the original shapes of Steve Pendarvis and his Pendoflex line of surfboards. The irreverent and innovative Sunset Cliffs surfer is part of a long line of unique San Diego shapers and designers that includes Skip Frye and especially Steve Lis. Steve has worked with Canyon Surfboards, Classic Glass, Superior Glass, and Diamond Glassing. Some of the surfers who have used Steve's boards include Buttons, Dave Rastovish, Dan Malloy and Gavin Beschen. Serge Dedina: When did you first start shaping surfboards? Steve …

Plus a rare catch made off the Long Beach coast, pregnant woman catches biggest fish on Native Sun Twilight and a great trip departs Saturday for San Clemente Island.
Black Pearl skipper Ricky Perez was scanning the horizon at Pyramid Cove, San Clemente Island on Saturday morning, keeping a close eye on the dozen kayakers he had ferried over to the Island the night before. The group, organized by Andy Allen from OEX in Sunset Beach, makes monthly mother-ship voyages on the Black Pearl to a variety of Southern California fishing hot spots. Perez had become concerned as three members of his flock had stayed out to sea, about a mile from the island. "There's no reason to be out there," thought Perez as he tried in vain to contact the threesome by VHF radio on channel 71. "They're not answering," said Perez. "Something is up." Perez launched the Black Pearl's 10-foot zodiac and headed in the direction of …

Whale calf-cow pairs are headed north from Baja birthing as excellent twilight bass fishing continues.
Twilight sand bass fishing has been good for the Native Sun out of Long Beach Sportfishing for most of the winter and spring. “We have seen nice big sandies on most trips,” said Captain Gabriel Ceballos. The bass have been taken best on a two-ounce banana leadhead tipped with squid. On Saturday, Ceballos took a Fishing with Phil group out in the face of a forecast calling for gale force winds. Ceballos said all along that the winds would back off and that the fish would bite. He was right on. The winds came down and the fish put on as good a bite as has been seen all year long. Lots of big sand bass, a medical emergency at sea, and more on this memorable trip. Ceballos will be out this Friday and Saturday night, 6:30pm-midnight for more …

Many Southern Californian's don't know that these apex predators visit our beaches every year.
We're going to need a bigger boat. That thought had to have crossed the minds of two commercial fishermen in Mexico who hauled up a great white shark reported to measure nearly 20 feet and weighing more than 2,000 pounds. The apex predator was caught in net Sunday in the Sea of Cortez near Guaymas. The fishermen said it was dead before it reached the surface. Pisces Sportfishing in Cabo San Lucas reported the catch on its blog Tuesday morning. "We were amazed and immediately realized that we had a huge, dead, great white shark, and then we thought what are we going to do?," Guadalupe told Pisces. Outdoors reporter Pete Thomas posted stories on the incredible catch to Pete Thomas Outdoors and GrindTv.com. It was quite a chore to get the …

The yellowfin tuna weighed an incredible 427.9 pounds.
One of the largest yellowfin tunas caught in the world--if not the largest--was reeled in last week in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, weighing a staggering 427.9 pounds when it was put to scale Sunday. According to Patch fish columnist Phil Friedman, the incredible catch was made by Robert Pedigo onboard his boat the Journeyman Thursday morning at around 10:30 a.m. with Captain Russel O'Neil at the helm. The current world record is held by Mike Livingston, who made his catch on the San Diego long range boat Vagabond on Nov. 30, 2010. His fish weighed 405.2-pounds. Livingston’s record will remain intact because a crew member onboard the yacht admitted to touching the rod while Pedigon was reeling in the giant fish. Any International Game Fish …

The new car goes airborne, there's a rookie mistake, and Esteban Guerrieri leads every lap to win Indy Lights race.
If there was a scary moment in the 38th Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, it came on Lap 22 when Marco Andretti took flight. It was notable because it marked the first time that the new Dallara chassis—designed to prevent cars from going airborne after touching tires—has yielded such a result. A pod behind each of the rear tires is supposed to prevent cars from going into the air when tires make contact, but Andretti took off after running up the back of Graham Rahal during a wild sequence in the first half of the race. Vice president of technology Will Phillips will review the accident before commenting about the pods and what might have happened, and whether any changes will be made to the structure of the chassis, according to an …

Jay, in the perfect world, there would be YouTube of this Grimm's Fairy Tale-sounding experience. But as a kayaker in the ocean with a fish dragging you, there probably were not enough hands to film, too :D But if anyone has photo or video, post it!   more ›
