The latest update is that it was not a bank but a person near one, who was robbed of cash, and a Long Beach Police Department search ended with arrests.
There was no bank robbery. Preliminary info: A man was robbed of cash Friday afternoon on Second Street, and a police swarm into Belmont Shore by air and foot ended with the arrests of two suspects, Long Beach police confirmed. An earlier report that a man was an armed robbery victim proved to be unfounded, because no weapon was seen, said spokeswoman Lisa Massaani. She said the victim was robbed near a bank, of an unspecified amount of cash, in the 5300 block of Second Street, which stretches from about Glendora to the Bayshore bridge. "We don't name businesses," said said, "but it was near a bank." A reader reported seeing uniformed officers inside Citibank (the old Blockbuster) at Santa Ana, but perhaps they were seeking witnesses or …
Afternoon theft draws big ground and air response by Long Beach Officers, who closed some streets.
This story has been updated with more complete details here An armed robber who stole cash from a Second Street bank Friday afternoon drew a swarm of uniformed officers to Belmont Shore, where they blocked streets and circled by air searching for the suspect. The blue police helicopter circled several spots tightly, from the Alamitos Bay area to residential streets where people could be seen at the curb, gazing to the sky. Claremont Avenue was briefly closed on both sides of Division, where cars idled, waiting. A patrol officer confirmed at about 3 p.m. that an armed robber was being pursued by air and foot, and that he'd taken money from (we think) Farmers & Merchants Bank. We await more exact details, but wanted to alert folks what the …

The suspect immediately got out of his car and when the officer ordered him to remain where he was, he drew a handgun, he said. The officer fired several rounds, striking the suspect in the lower torso, LeBaron said. The suspect was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, he said, adding …

Shooting investigation has yielded few leads but detectives do have a getaway car description: Hyundai.
A car-to-car shooting by possible gang-members left a man wounded in the back earlier this month but few clues for Long Beach Police Department detectives, who are now seeking the public's help. On May 1, 2012, in the area of 57th Street and Chestnut Avenue, near Deforest Park, a man was in a car with two other passengers that had been followed by a black sedan. From the sedan's passenger side, shots were fired into the victim's car, leaving one man wounded in the back, and two others uninjured, Long Beach Police Department press release stated. It stated that detectives learned that the shooting was possibly by gang members, but it did not state whether the victim, unidentified, was gang-affiliated, too. The suspect vehicle has been …

A former Long Beach employee who handled cash transactions for the city's Animal Care Services division pleaded not guilty Monday to misappropriating more than $253,000 in public funds. The charges against Jongluck Mutrais, 59, of Orange, cover an 11-month period between Oct. 1, 2009, and Sept. 1, 2010. City Auditor Laura Doud found, at a new department leader's request, $253,000. However, at her arraignment, Deputy District Attorney Dana Aratani said the city's Animal Care Services Bureau is estimating that she misappropriated more than $500,000 over the course of more than 10 years of employment. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Shelly Torrealba refused a defense request to reduce Mitrais' bail from $500,000. She has been in custody …

Long Beach city officials are warning the public about a nationwide scam that aims to trick people into providing personal financial information under the guise that the federal government will pay their utility bills. Currently, there is no such federal program in place, according to Long Beach city officials. The swindle involves the scammers providing bogus bank routing numbers for victims to use. Long Beach city officials investigating this matter have provided a warning notice on their Utility Billing Web Site, and are reminding all customers “to be wary of scams that sound too good to be true, or promise something for nothing,” according to a statement. Authorities are warning residents to protect their personal information at all …

A woman walking her dog is attacked by two pit bulls, but primarily one, and left seriously injured after onlookers could not free her and Long Beach police shot the dog to save her.
A woman walking her dog was attacked by two pit bulls, seriously injured and was freed only after a Long Beach police officer fatally shot one of the pit bulls Saturday night, police said. The woman was expected to survive her injuries but remained hospitalized in serious condition, Long Beach Police Sgt. Dave Marander said. He said the woman was walking her dog at about 6 p.m. when a pair of pit bulls neared her and both initially attacked she and her dog near the 300 block of East Coolidge Street, which is west of the Los Angeles River and the Long Beach (710) Freeway. It wasn't entirely clear but it appears one of the pit bulls was the primary attack dog and the woman, not her dog, endured the brunt of the attack. Onlookers tried to …

It doesn't help that some aspects of popular culture (TV, movies, and music videos) seem to have moved away from depicting actors and musicians either buckling up or already belted when they are driving. As innured to, and by, pop culture as so many are anymore, something so simple as that can make a big difference in the actions and driving habits of the audiences.   more ›
