I was a 1st time volunteer this year as well as being a sister who was diagnosed with breast cancerRead More ! I was so proud to give each and everyone who came through the finish line a pair of Flip Flops compliments from Farmers Bank , as each one who received a pair from me at the end "Save the Feets as well ", I surely was honored to help pass those out for F& M bank , as my sister was recently diagnosed !

I'm censored REPEATEDLY for calling someone a coward. Yet the patch consistently allows others toRead More call me names. What a bunch of BS.
Nancy Wride (Editor) September 14, 2012 at 10:59 pm
Mike, I just saw this comment in the moderation queue, and approved it. I deleted one comment ofRead More yours in more than a year, I'd guess. But you are correct that I should have deleted Greet's last comment about you. My bad. On some stories like the poll on whether you'd vote for Obama or Romney, there is no way I nor any other editor can keep up with hundreds of comments, and most of those posters know they are going into the Thunderdome of comments :D
Mike Ruehle September 15, 2012 at 05:06 am
Yet you deleted my comment calling someone a "COWARD" for that person refusing to commentRead More in person and instead using others to do so. Maybe you can tell me what an acceptable descriptor is for this type of behavior so that I can use it in the future.

n/a, I am sorry for your loss of a relative. If you feel comfortable, please share with us what youRead More know of your cousin, and what you think might have happened to him. Again, condolences.--Nancy If you prefer private conversation, nancy.wride@patch.com

Simple answer...they hold the fishing derby once a year. Ban all surfing within a fifty feetRead More distance within the pier that day. Cite anyone that violates the issue and that will solve the problem.
carter kendrick August 17, 2012 at 08:58 pm
Trust me, if this had happened at Belmont Pier, or my daughter's fishing pole, somebody would haveRead More gone to jail. Believe that!!!

I'm not a trouble maker, but let them cut my line and there will be TROUBLE!

I had seen three coyotes in the North Long Beach area in the early morning on Aug 9th. I had savedRead More a cat that one of the coyotes was trying to get. I just followed in my car and kept honking the horn over & over again until I finally had scared it away. I did inform Animal Control on the same day. Unfortuantely I was not able to save a cat that they had already killed and were eating prior. I hate to see ANY animal in danger, nevertheless when it is someone's pet!

Hello, I live on Grand View Blvd. in Mar Vista Los Angeles. Tonight I scarred off 2 COYOTES from myRead More driveway at 2:30am (on Jan 5 2013). I had let my cat out earlier and went to call him in when I saw them out front. Thankfully I was able to retrieve him and my other cats who were also out. Surprisingly my dog did not bark during the whole occurrence. I have also recently, (yesterday) seen a large, pink tipped HAWK circling my area and at the top of Grand View Hill @ Palms around 12 noon-1 pm, and have been told by a neighbor that there is an OWL hanging around as well!. THESE ARE ALL PREDATORS AND ARE LOOKING FOR OUR PETS as FOOD/PREY All of this is REALLY BAD news for owners of small pets that spend time outdoors unattended. PLEASE NOTIFY RESIDENTS!!

A coyote just got my 13 year old dearly beloved Siamese on Monday August 5 sometime betweenRead More 6:30-9:30pm. I live on Warren, just 2 blocks south of the Santa Monica airport. She rarely strayed from my front & back yards. This coyote got her early in the evening while people were still out walking their dogs. Neighbors… please be aware!

"Mature larvae emerge from the junction of the head and thorax, often decapitating the bee (theRead More generic name Apocephalus refers to this grim result)." -from the 'parasite fly' link above Grim, indeed. Gruesome, even. I'll keep a lookout for the "strange bee-havior" (made me laugh) Pete notes above.

Could well be very reliable, Shripathi. I really don't know. I'm just pleased to see some of thoseRead More currently or formerly in the program willing to register their protest in this way. I think this is very significant, nor can that be too easily dismissed or diminshed simply because others among their number may not be aware of their gestures. Though I don't think we will ever hear an accurate count, I would be very interested to learn just how many current and former Scouters actually have, or will, surrender their awards and badges by the time this is all over. Will it make a difference? Perhaps not one sufficient to compel the national organization to change its policy. Then again, it might. It just might.

Life isn't fair and discrimination, intentional or not, exists. These days those who choose to standRead More up for and live with traditional principles, standards, structure, and values are the ones being judged and called names these days. So who and whose rights are really being discriminated against? The returning of Eagle medals does not impress me and I salute and admire BSA's position. Let the slander ensue......
John B. Greet August 2, 2012 at 06:40 pm
"Life isn't fair and discrimination, intentional or not, exists." So very true. And noRead More amount of government intervention is going to make life completely fair for every person, all the time, under every circumstances. Likewise, discrimination exists, and not all of it bad. When we discriminate against a convicted felon, for example, prohibiting him or her from owning a firearm or from voting, we are, I think, discriminating in a "good" way. It is only when we discriminate in a "bad" way, when we engage in prejudicial treatment of an individual based on his or her membership -or perceived membership- in a certain group or category, that we behave improperly and, depending upon the circumstances, unlawfully. This is precisely why I do not believe government should even *be* in the marriage business unless it is going to cease its unlawful discrimination against our LGBT community. Its doing so is an example of the "bad" sort of discrimination. Its doing so, I believe, denies an entire class of people their 14th Amendment right to equal treatment under the law. "So who and whose rights are really being discriminated against?" That would be our LGBT bretheren and sistren. Those protesting the BSA on this matter are not discriminating against anyone or anyone else's rights. They are simply exercising their own rights to free speech and assembly, just as all of the Chick-fil-A counter-protesters have been doing in the past few days.
