"It was a throwaway statistic in an article about the heavy metal band Slayer that got JonathanRead More Pieslak thinking. During the Gulf war, he read, some 40% of the band's fan mail came from soldiers stationed in the Middle East." http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/blog/2009/sep/28/heavy-metal-music-us-army-iraq Heavy Metal Marine Combat Compilation [video] http://www.military.com/video/forces/marine-corps/marines-at-their-best/661821519001/ "What's interesting about the work is not so much which bands soldiers are drawn to, but the extraordinary terms they use to describe the power the music has over them. Some talk about tracks turning them into monsters, making them inhuman so they can do inhuman acts."

For the most part, it is theatrical, images, etc. I personally known many artists that are in theRead More metal scene and also worked with many others. Like when the whole world thought that Iron Maiden were satanists because of Number Of The Beast. I actually know one of the former drummers from Slayer. On rare occasions, it is real. I can think of a couple Swedish death metal bands that took themselves too seriously and began to believe that it was all real, but those are just the signs of a weak mind who couldn't separate the showmanship from reality. There is only one well known musician that I know who truly dances with the dark one and he is generally pretty far from metal and for the most part, his albums and performances do not reflect it.

Thanks, Watts. The Hammer Horror ref is interesting. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmguXOPc9VIRead More There may be a tangent in that: whether one plays earnestly or theatrically with potent symbols, authentic demons may be summoned. The larger the crowd, the greater the demonic potential, it would seem. I'm just glad the Maysles captured the Altamont event. It's a fascinating document.

I think they want to make sure that nothing happens like lwhat happen at Adan Sanchez services. YesRead More it does say the money will be refunded!
Nancy Wride (Editor) December 18, 2012 at 09:58 pm
If you read the story it says that the $1 charge will be reimbursed after the service. It sounds toRead More me like they are trying to avoid reservations for seats and then they don't show. Maybe?

I agree, Pamela. And Dave Newell's photos are taken by a true lover of the arts and of TheRead More Nutcracker. (Do you have a sister, Kathy? :D)
Pamela Bozanich December 16, 2012 at 12:38 pm
This is a beautiful production of the Nutcracker and really sets the holiday mood. The liveRead More orchestra is terrific. It is a visual feast for the Christmas season and if you've never seen this Nutcracker, you are missing out.

Amazon just changed their street date to 12/18 and I also see that the price increased from 9.99 toRead More $13.45, but the official date is still 12/11 and any physical stores that had this scheduled to come in would still have it. I can see the inventory levels at one of the distributors and they made the inventory available for on-line sales at midnight and by 12:30 AM, were sold out but I bet that was just their system allocating to existing on-line preorders. It is rare to see a release scheduled so close to an artists death, although famously Lynyrd Skynyrd had the plane crash three days after Street Survivors was released and the original "band in flames" cover was altered and rereleased. As is the case after the death of any artist; it will take a few weeks until the demand and availability of this and her previous albums balances out. As of right now, I can see that every currently in print release of hers is sold out at the distributors, which is also something that would be commonly expected.

Wow. What timing, thanks for that Watts.

Ron, I think we've not had more than drizzle, so the weather Gods seem to shine on us.

I will add that to this story. Thought it was in the last. I have missed only one, if that, in myRead More years in the Shore. It's a tradition. I do also miss the Ripples float with the impersonators (Liza, Cher....) :D

@jim capistrano - I agree with you. Sometimes I wonder if these Patch reports are being submittedRead More and edited by first year journalism students. Al Gore - that was a fairly inappropriate response, although you are completely within your right to voice your opinion as such, I wouldn't look for much sympathy from other readers, regardless of their political bent ( and yes, I agree with your statement - just not it's choice of forum). All this being said, the band responsible was also well within their right to act upon the fate of their own intellectual property - and chose this outcome. I am moderately distraught over the obsession we have with "political correctness" in this day and age. Surely we are headed down a path of a much less "interesting" society - to say nothing of the amount of ideas and speech which are being repressed in the name of marketing and profitability.
jim capistrano November 12, 2012 at 05:57 pm
That's an adult response ...and you're wondering why Romney lost the election...
Al Gore November 12, 2012 at 04:32 pm
Because the Left is crazy.
