Yeah, poignant at this point.
Mike King May 22, 2013 at 08:15 pm
Thanks Trish: we're in the fledgling stages of commercial spaceflight and we don't even know it yet.Read More I love it. Let's hope the interest continues, even if it's driven by the rich folk. As Jerry Pournelle once said, "I always knew I would see the first man on the moon. I never dreamed I would see the last." Let's hope that doesn't happen.
Slain gay rights leader and San Francisco Board of Supervisors member Harvey Milk.

Story corrected. It needed the word male, as in first gay male elected to political office.
Mike Ruehle May 21, 2013 at 06:50 pm
When did Redevelopment Agency Money NOT become funded by taxpayers? Is there another RDA donor outRead More there that I am unaware of?
Mike Ruehle May 21, 2013 at 06:48 pm
I understand Harvey Milk was glamorized by a movie, but aren't there many more LGBT PIONEERS thatRead More proceeded Milk that should therefore also deserve parks named after them? If you google images of LGBT Pioneers, Milk isn't even in the top 100. I think its great to have highlighted a LGBT Pioneer, but why not one of the many well-known Pioneers from Long Beach rather than one from San Francisco? I can easily name several well known Long Beach activists who had a tremendous impact on Long Beach gay rights. How about Billie Jean King, Judith Doyle, Marilyn Barlow, Bob Crow, or Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske. By the way, your article is incorrect. Check your facts. Harvey Milk was NOT the first gay official elected to public office as you claim. Openly gay Elaine Noble was elected to the Massachusetts State Legislature in 1978 The real question is why the Patch is NOT questioning why taxpayer's money is being spent highlighting a San Francisco Pioneer rather than one of the many deserving people from Long Beach? Is this just another Patch attempt to placate City Hall by boosting Councilman Garcia's political resume? .

I so LOATHE hearing stories like this. Caught in the act, yet pleads not guilty. But I think theRead More real problem lies in not so much in accountability, but how we seem to lack a true and equitable form of punishment for crime.

Oh I really was sad to miss it. I have taken Shaila's classes with all three of my kids. I recommendRead More these two mindful and caring individuals for anyone who seeks clarity and renewed energy on their parenting journey. I sure am looking forward to summer's events!
Carla Gerard May 21, 2013 at 11:38 am
These two ladies are phenomenal. I attended this event and their first one as well. Even though I'mRead More older than most of the mom's there, I was completely comfortable and felt fully embraced and welcomed by Shaila and Mollie. I had great conversations with other moms and discovered common threads among us. A very well organized and executed event!

Have you been offered or asked for sound-proofing mitigation? (I know just the time and effort ofRead More having to ask to protect your home and family from the noise is tiresome.)
Steve Musick May 14, 2013 at 12:00 pm
It's not only Long Beach that's effected, but also East Carson area. For a period of time now BSNFRead More has been operating a maintenance yard West of Alemeda Blvd between Carson Blvd and Wardlow Rd. My family has been in this house for at least 60 years and the noise polution eminating from that site is at times un-believably loud and at inconvenient times of day. (3 - 5AM in the morning). I am in hopes that if this Coridor Project goes through, they will also mitigate the noise at this location. It effects the property values as well as keeping us awake and inconveniant hours.

Do you agree? What are your thoughts?
Don Abernathy May 14, 2013 at 08:06 pm
As a lifelong resident of Long Beach and publisher of Cuffed and Wanted, LA County's only crimeRead More specific newspaper, the increase in crime is very concerning. Unfortunately crime is on the rise across cities and counties all over California. AB109 is putting too many criminals on the street. As a publisher, I'm seeing more and more crime increases. We need our politicians to make the right decisions to clean up our neighborhoods, create jobs and change our jails so they rehabilitate criminals instead of pampering them.
John B. Greet May 14, 2013 at 08:28 am
Ruehle cites and links a blog called "The Cannabis Chronicles" (a heavily biased OC-basedRead More blog) in support of his contention that The Patch is biased in its own reporting. Hilarious.
Mike Ruehle May 14, 2013 at 06:56 am
Read Orange County medias to learn about Long Beach Cops being the "most lame and hypocriticalRead More in Southern California." You will have to read about it at the attached link to Orange County medias because the Patch chooses to not print something that might incite the anger of Long Beach city hall and circumvent their ability obtain zero-effort press releases to publish as if they are fact. http://blogs.ocweekly.com/navelgazing/2013/05/long_beach_cops_acting_like_do_1.php

I agree. The wolves ARE watching the hen-house.
John B. Greet May 11, 2013 at 07:37 pm
Dave it is impossible to say or, for me, to even guess. In my experience, so many of these ideasRead More are poorly developed and even more poorly researched. Observe all the Medpot silliness: Completely ignore collectives operating openly throughout the city for over a decade, then pass an ordinance despite their continuing federal illegality, only to turn around and ban them once again. Observe the foolish plastic bag ban: Passed without a single local study to support the need for it. Passed without any explanation of where the authority comes from to mandate the fees involved or to dictate fee-use terms to stores once those fees are collected. On this issue? Who knows? Given the typically abysmal voter turn-outs in most Long Beach elections and the all but non-existent threat of recall, whence comes the motivation for local electeds to be more accountable to the residents they ostensibly serve?
Dave Newell May 11, 2013 at 07:07 pm
John, do you think any of the other city's leaders will take any of this to heart, or simply ignoreRead More it and look for ways to play it off with the usual smoke and mirrors?

I have lived in Long Beach since 1970 and have lived in Belmont Shore, Belmont Heights, theRead More Peninsula, downtown and now for 15 years in Park Estates where we have lots of student parking on public streets that comes with living near a university. Cities everywhere need to change and adapt as cities grow. As an ex city planner I do know that there are public hearings for zoning changes and for conditional uses where we the people are able to voice concerns to hopefully come up with win win solutions for all parties. This is the democratic process that governs our public and private environments. To address your thought, I think we need to elect public officials that are independent of economic interests.
Nancy Wride (Editor) May 21, 2013 at 11:31 am
In theory I agree, Jack. We are blessed with the ability to live at the beach, and in tidelands areaRead More where public access to everyone's beach is everyone's right. It gets trickier for some of my neighbors on streets behind certain restaurants and bars where they feel the city government has allowed increased capacity with no added parking, which was not the understanding they had of city zoning when they bought their places. But this isn't the case at Mother's Beach. Do you live near that beach?
Jack Roberts May 21, 2013 at 07:54 am
This reminds me of people that buy a house in an air flight pattern and lobby to down size theRead More airport. You have a home on a public street near a public beach facility. Perhaps a home on a private street behind the gates in Orange County , here vans can not be parked on the street, is a more pleasant environment for you rather than a large and diverse City.
