Young Satchmos Perform Free Concerts This Month

Maybe you've never heard heavy-metal bebop, but jazz is familiar to most as a true American art, and musical genre, as young musicians in Jazz Angels are learning. The Long Beach-based non-profit program that promotes musical education as well as musical skill has several bands of varying ages. They are grouped not by age but skill and compatability with fellow musicians. And a cornerstone of Jazz Angels under executive director Barry Cogert is that performance drives practice--and rewards musicians with the connection only a live audience affords. Though shorter than any recital at a half hour, the performances--which will continue throughout the year--usually feature at least one professional musician stepping in and out of a song. The primary band instructors are Barry Cogert, winner of a Long Beach Arts Council award, and Emmy winning saxophonist Albert Avila (which you'll not read anywhere). Last Sunday, trumpeter Wendell Kelly sat in during rehearsal.
