Watch: Blue Whales' Biggest Threat are Ships

The population off the coast of Long Beach is being studied to identify and follow specific whales because it boasts the 'strongest population in the world,' in the area, estimated at 2,000.

The Aquarium of the Pacific has been partnering for over two years with one of the world’s leading blue whale experts at Cascadia Research Collective on identifying individual blue whales off the coast of Long Beach and surrounding waters. Media were invited Tuesday to learn the latest findings of a long-term study, which Belmont Shore-Naples Patch's Off the Hook Fishing Report Columnist, Philip Friedman, will bring in greater detail in his next Patch column. Featured in this Aquarium-produced YouTube is what the Aquarium identified as a world-renowned whale expert, John Calambokidis, co-founder of the Collective. His talk made for an extended floating press conference aboard Harbor Breeze Cruises of Long Beach.
