Volunteers Sought for 150th Beach Cleanup Saturday

Justin Rudd started the Saturday morning beach cleanup in 1999. Ten years later, the community itself, powered by volunteers, keep the Belmont Shore sands tidier.

Volunteers are needed on Saturday morning for the 150th monthly “30-minute Beach Cleanup” to keep the one-mile stretch of sand in Belmont Shore and beyond litter-free.

At 10 a.m., volunteers are asked to gather at the Granada boat launch (which is where many dogs enter the dog beach) to help clean the beach and rid it of plastic bottles, trash bags, cigarette butts and anything else that doesn't belong there.

The cleanup started in June of 1999, when Justin Rudd asked 12 friends to join him on a sunny Saturday morning to pick up trash that the city couldn’t keep up with. Now over 10 years later, Rudd is joined by a couple hundred volunteers most clean-up Saturdays, rain or shine, to ensure that the shorefront is as clean and beautiful as possible.

Anyone and everyone can participate as long as they can pick up. Rudd said the age has ranged from 3 to 93 years old, and throughout the years large groups have attended from schools, churches and businesses. Students can earn community service credit, which makes for an easy commitment from the immediate neighborhood.

On Saturday, there will be door prizes, which include two brand new bikes. Additional door prizes include, Aquarium of the Pacific tickets, and a gift basket from Cowboy Dan’s Jerky Emporium. All you have to do is show up by 10 a.m., park (free parking at 1 Granada) and grab your raffle ticket. There will be other contests and refreshments provided after the cleanup.
