Wilson High School Crowns a New Prom Queen and Prom King

How are the Prom Queen and King elected? I had cause to ask.

I wouldn't normally be aware of the Prom Queen and King of our local High School.  I expect as we grow into Wilson High School, I will.  This year, however, I'm pleased to announce that Lily Tsoi-A-Sue was crowned Prom Queen at Wilson High School.  Isaac Contreras was crowned Prom King.

I did not graduate from an American high school, so my awareness of Prom King and Queen is limited to what I see in the movies and on TV.  Today Lily enlightened me on the process for getting to Prom Queen.

Candidates are nominated by their friends in advance of the prom.

If they choose, candidates may campaign for votes, but it is not required.  Lily's formal campaign was the making of stickers for her friends to wear.  There was no speech giving required.

The top 5 candidates in each category will compete for the title on the night of the prom.  Each attending graduate receives two pebbles for voting.  One for Prom King, one for Prom Queen.  The pebbles are counted.  Candidates stand onstage (with their supporters cheering for them) and the winners are announced.

Congratulations to Lily Tsoi-A-Sue and Isaac Contreras!

A little about Lily
I do happen to know Lily.  She is my niece.  This post, however, is giving me the opportunity to have the "what are you going to do next?" conversation.

Lily has been working in retail at the local Marshall's store.  She will attend Cal-State Long Beach (a really amazing local treasure) with a declared major of Psychology.  She has set as her goal a PhD in Psychology with the intent to do research or teach.  While she is working on this, she will continue to work at Marshall's.  She also hopes, schedule permitting, to be working on campus supporting the textbook operations.
