Strange and Super: Isotope Comics' James Sime

When you nurture creatives, artists and story tellers in the Comic Book genre, it's inevitable that you - your character - is written into a story or two.

James Sime is a character in comics, there's no doubt about that.  He's fast talking, suited up in his costume daily and he's got a characteristic stand-out hairstyle and mustache.

I really enjoyed visiting with James at Isotope Comics, and made a video to share with you.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifRDU8LxFZM

Isotope Comics
He's the owner of Isotope Comics in San Francisco, and Isotope Comics was on our list of places to go on our recent road trip to the Bay Area.  We walked 3 miles from Pier 39 to 326 Fell Street to visit with James and check out the store.  We weren't the only ones.  As we were there, Thanksgiving visitors from other states also showed up.  They, too, had put this unique little comic book store on their list of places to visit in San Francisco.

A tip on getting there: The F train will take you from Pier 39 to Fell and Market, just 3 blocks from the store.

Comic Book Character and Muppet
James' character has been featured in at least two comics: Comic artist Robert Kirkman has placed him in one of the issues of The Walking Dead and in another comic, Invincible.  Another fan has created his look in a little felted James Sime.

Super Good Guy
As I've come to learn, these independent comic book stores (Are all Comic Book stores independent?  Hm... there's a thought...) give back in a huge way to the Comic Book world by nurturing up and coming artists of all ages.  Some of those artists may be discovered.  Isotope Comics hosts the annual Isotope Award for Excellence in Mini Comics.  Mini comics provide a format for creators to work through an idea without making the commitment for a full story and comic publication.  Upstairs in the loft area, you can have sit and read many mini-comics published by independent comic book writers and artists.

Doctor Lollipop and Creator Kelly Martin
James was excited to be hosting a special exhibit of  works by Kelly Martin, creator of Doctor Lollipop (Featured on YouTube channel CartoonHangover).

Cartoon Hangover
A little bit of background from the Cartoon Hangover website.  Cartoon Hangover is a production of Frederator Studios which has produced many series and short films including The Fairly OddParents, Fanboy & Chum Chum, and Adventure Time. Their shows are on Nickelodeon, Nick Jr, Cartoon Network, and Channel Frederator. Frederator is in producing partnership with Sony Pictures Animation and YouTube.
