Photos: Long Beach Robotics Teams Compete in First LB Robo Bowl

Long Beach Unified is implementing VEX Robotics teams at several middle schools, enabled by a generous grant from the Stuart Foundation.

A very important event happened today.  It was billed as the Robo Bowl, the first ever of its kind held in LBUSD.  It was a district wide VEX Robotics competition, "Clean Sweep", which brought together teams formed in response to a generous grant from the Stuart Foundation and with substantial operational support from the Leadership Long Beach class of 2012-2013, which has been meeting and planning for many months.

This academic year (12-13) the Stuart Foundation gave a grant to scale up the number of LBUSD middle schools robotics teams from three to twelve.

Today's event was hosted by Leadership Long Beach's Class of 2013, with sponsorship from the Westerly School, the Josephine S. Gumbiner Foundation, Signal Hill Petroleum and the Long Beach Police Officer Association.

My apologies for any omissions or errors in names/spelling.

Thanks to Leadership Long Beach's organizing team: Ana Jimenez, Anna Topolewski, Carmen Brooks, Ty Burford and Uduak Ntuk for their roles in today's events.  Thanks also, LBUSD's Ken Weber and Pete Davis, Westerly School's Chris Rodenheizer and Hamilton coach Ethan George for their roles in the project and event.

Competing Schools:
Washington Middle School, Coach: Mr. Stone
Bancroft Middle School, Coach: Mr. Pierce
Hamilton Middle School, Coach: Ethan George
Hill Middle School Coach: Mr. Eglko
Hughes Middle School, Coach: Mr. Rogers
Jefferson Middle School, Coach: Marisela Moreno
Lindberg Middle School, Coach Fred Dizon
Lindsey Middle School, Coach: Miss Sandstedt
Powell Middle School, Coach Susan Garcia
Stanford Middle School, Coach: Bryan Feely
Stephens Middle School, Coach Mike Leyden
Westerly School, Coach: Mitchell Baker

A little additional background:
The story actually started some 5 years ago, with a grant from the California Academy of Mathematics and Science (CAMS).  The grant supported teams from three schools: Linsey, Powell and Hamilton Middle Schools.  Those schools evolved successful robotics programs, and provided a foundation for this next level grant.
