To the Reader: You may know that I've been visualizing a local youth-based Maker program in Long Beach, CA for some time. Well, it's happening... Slowly (or is that quickly?), but it's happening... We made a lot of progress this year, but we've got lots of plans for next year!
Dear Santa,
Santa, I know you're busy, but somehow you seem to be able to read all my letters... Thank you for taking the time to read this letter.
Santa, I wanted to tell you about the workshop we want to make for you, here in Long Beach. You see, we know that good elves are hard to come by, and we want to make it easier for you to handle all that work that you have at Christmas time.
Santa, please bring me an Epilog Zing 24" laser cutter with a rotary attachment. You see, Santa, I want to make wooden gears. I tried making some with a scroll saw, and it takes a lot of time (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whlvtqfVo-Q). I really liked the experience, but I'm not at my father-in-law's home too often, and I don't have all the tools I need to make the wooden gears. Santa, I'm also coming to realize that you can make the gear, or you can make the thing that uses the gear, but it's really hard to get anything done if you try to do it all from scratch... So, I'd like to get some help with a laser cutter so that we can make wooden gears, links and other cool shapes. I went to check one out, so I know which one I want... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTHSw57fRKA. We made these gears in about 5 minutes, Santa!
Then, Santa, we can get those elves figuring out how to make some wooden toys for you.
Santa, there are lots of things that we want to get, but we know we can't get them all from you, so we'll ask our friends and neighbors to help with stuff from their garage like sewing machines, gaming platforms, smart phones, electronic toys and hand tools.
But Santa, there's one more thing that I'm putting on the list this year. It's so big, Santa, that I want to write a separate letter to you about it. I hope you don't mind...
