Butterflies on a Field Trip

The monarch butterflies are all Orange and Black. From a distance, so similar. Close up, so different. Las Mariposas are working to create their individual visions of the monarch butterfly.

Tuesday I took a field trip with a group I call "Las Mariposas". Las Mariposas - the butterflies.  It's a weekly mother's sewing group that meets at the Cultural Alliance Long Beach on Wednesdays. The group is preparing for the Monarch Festival in September.  A long way away.  But not really.  There's lots to be done.

Destination: The Los Angeles Garment District

Getting there by public transportation took a while.  We took the blue line to the DASH and walked for what seemed like hours... It was hours, just only two or three.  It was actually just a few blocks, but we were pretty exhausted after a day of shop, shop, shopping.  We were looking for butterfly themed fabrics, orange and black, appliques, jewelery pieces and more.

We came back with materials, beads, glue, dye.  All great stuff for making things.  Everyone is working on creating their version, their idea, their own product that they can sell at an artisan faire on September.

We didn't get to see everythingn we wanted, or to go back to the stores we'd passed, thinking we would return.  We all promised we'd be back for more.

This faire is interesting in that it will be run by an Hispanic Mother's group in downtown Los Angeles.  The moms will do it.  Organize, volunteer, find vendors and friends.  It's empowerment at its most basic.

Everyone is very excited!

September.  I'll remember to put out the actual date for your calendar soon.
