Solar Car Race Heats Up!

Solar car makers are working on their entries for the 3rd annual Solar Grand Prix! Got technical knowledge? You can help too!

Now in its third year, preparations for the Solar Grand Prix are in full swing!  I first learned of this race from a leader of Scout Troop 67, which has participated in the race since its inception.

The race is sponsored by 5th District Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske.  It challenges students in grades 6 through 12 to design, build and race a solar car.

The only elements that must be included in the entry are provided in a Solar Car Kit: a solar panel and an electric motor.  Beyond that?  The car designs and materials used are limited only by the team's imagination (and a few basic rules provided by the organizers).

The race will take place a week after the Toyota Grand Prix, on Saturday, April 21st, at Long Beach's El Dorado Park (Willow and Studebaker).

Until then, the four-person teams are working with their coaches to prepare their entries.

Awards will be presented based upon the performance and design of the entries.

The three categories of design awards are: Overall design, Innovation and Best Re-use of Materials.

Volunteers are needed to be technical mentors to the teams between now and April 21st.  On the race day, volunteers are needed to fill the roles of design judges, technical inspectors, race and lane judges.

To volunteer or for more information, contact Rachel Powers at Council Member Schipske's office (562) 570-6932 or by emailing rachel.powers@longbeach.gov.
