Murals and Mosaics of Long Beach, CA

I'm playing the Community Lemonade Game, and want a list of the Murals and Mosaics of Long Beach, CA. I'm having trouble finding a comprehensive list, so I need your help in making one here!

We're making Community Lemonade in Long Beach, CA.  Come and make lemonade with us!

!  I'm on a 100 day odyssey for community and creativity in Long Beach, CA.  We've got such an amazing city, and I'm a huge fan!  I want to share it with you!  I'm seeking out the creatives and the facilitators of creativity.  The art and the locations that inspire art.  Bringing them to you, here in this blog, and to others, on the streets of Long Beach.

I call it .

Today I visited the Historical Society of Long Beach and am inspired to document the murals and mosaics of Long Beach, CA.

Several of them will be WPA era, and these will be noted.  If not, their funding source will be noted if possible.  Photographs of or at the locations will also be displayed, along with any information I can find about the mural.

I know there are many, I probably can't find them all.  Still, I can start a list, and you can add to it also.

This list is to be managed in the comments.  Here's the format for the list:

  • Type of artwork (Mural or Mosaic)
  • Location of artwork (building name/school name/building purpose/address)
  • Artist name (if known)
  • Name of art piece
  • Description (size, subject matter, funding agency, year)
  • Anything else that I forgot.

If you don't know it all, just list the first two and I will follow up as I can.  I'm looking for large works (visible from a distance) but if you have an interesting small mural to point out, I'd like to know that too.  (list large or small).

Since this is intended to be a list of artwork, please do not add any non-list items to the comments.

Trish, the Long Beach Public Library has a sweet file on many many murals in Long Beach. You may want to contact the history librarian there, Stephanie, for more information. If you make an appointment with her ahead of time, she will pull files and photos for you. Also, did you get a copy of the fabulous brochure HSLB put together on the New Deal in Long Beach from last year's exhibit? Check this article from the Gazettes: http://www.gazettes.com/to_do/historical-society-highlights-new-deal-artwork/article_950ede6e-d4e4-11e0-a7be-001cc4c03286.html. Have fun with your mural search!

Thanks, Maureen! I'm going to visit the HSLB photographer who put the artwork together for their exhibit last year. So much fun! Great idea on the library!

Hi Mark. I'll see if I can find out. Roughly what time and nearest landmark if any?

Prior to his election as a write-in candidate, Councilman Patrick O'Donnell told the Long BeachRead More Business Journal on February 28, 2012 the following:***** LBBJ: If you win the reelection, will you commit to a full four-year term?***** Councilman O'Donnell: If you run for four, you serve four. ***** LBBJ: So, you're not going to run for Assembly in two years? ***** O'Donnell: Correct. ***** LBBJ: No matter what? ***** O'Donnell: Correct. If you run for four, you serve four. ***** If you can't trust O'Donnell's word, why would anyone vote for him to be their representative for political office? ***** http://www.lbreport.com/news/jan13/odonlbbj.htm

And do his supporters care about this, do you think? No doubt others will.

Regarding, "do O'Donnell's supporters care?", many of O'Donnell's supporters are inRead More elected and appointed public positions, and their support of O'Donnell includes placing the financial burden of a $150,000 special election on the taxpayers. I would think that a responsible journalist would ask each of them about that issue.
