Long Beach's Dog Royalty & Art Show: Lemonade Day 40

When life gives you lemons, make Community Lemonade in Long Beach with me. Day 40 - Did you ever feel that Long Beach is owned by the dogs?

. I'm taking the opportunity of this unplanned time off to connect with the many artists and creators in this wonderful city that I love. Come with me on my 100-day odyssey of art and creativity in Long Beach. I call it .

Yesterday we saw the .  Friday I sought out the royal dogs of Long Beach.  After all, our dogs have their own parks, they have their own beach.  Our dogs have their own parades, beauty contests and wear fun and funny costumes.  There are dog washes and dog walkers, doggie day camps, too!  We have doggie birthday parties and doggie cakes.  !  If you've ever thought "Man, I love it here in Long Beach because I love dogs!" then this exhibit is for you.

August 10th was Day 40.  I previewed the "Best in Show II... Art Goes to the Dogs" at the Liberty Art Gallery and Performance Space at 435 Alamitos Ave.

I know of this gallery because way, way back, when the first batch of Lemonade had just been made, .  I followed up on this tip, but there was no show that day. (I found out Friday that shows are scheduled about once every 4-6 weeks, and there is sometimes a 1-week period between shows.)

Saturday, the gallery opens its newest exhibit, "Best in Show II... Art Goes to the Dogs".  I know of the exhibit because has some pieces in this show.

Friday, I visited the gallery to preview the art on display, met artist Dudi who was putting the final touches on the installations and had a nice chat with Paige Bauer, who owns the gallery.

I was thrilled to find that Paige has a Lemonade story to tell.  The space has only been the Liberty Art Gallery since November.  For 10+ years prior to that it was the Second City Council Art Gallery.  Paige was a sometimes-renter of the space, curating group shows for and with the creatives around her.

In fact, this show was deferred due to the closing of the Second City Council Art Gallery.  Paige now runs the space as the Liberty Art Gallery and Performance Space.

This is a group show, and a wide variety of styles is evident.  Candid photographs, cute puppy shots, prints and mixed media.  Dogs loving the water and loving their poker.  I have posted a few images from the show.  I hope you don't mind, I'm partial to German Shepherds.

The opening reception is this Saturday, August 11th starting at 6:00 PM.  Donation $10.00 includes exhibit, appetizer, desserts.

The closing reception is Sunday, August 26th 11AM - 2PM.  Donation $10.00 includes exhibit and brunch-style snacks.

For viewing at other times, visit Monday or Tuesday 3-5PM or message Paige on the gallery's Facebook page.  The gallery is available for rent as special event and class execution space for the duration of the show.

When she's not taking photographs or arranging shows, Paige serves the royal dogs of Long Beach, including Princess Liberty, who has her very own art gallery.  If you need dog walking services, you can find Paige at http://www.whosyourdoggie.net.
