Downtown LB Scouting Fun at Pack 25 Pinewood Derby

Boy Scouts of America Pack 25 hosts its first ever Pinewood Derby.

Whew!  The effort was huge, but the rewards enormous!  What effort? What rewards?

The Effort

Boy Scouts of America Pack 25, the budding downtown Long Beach cub scout unit at International Elementary (7th and Long Beach Blvd), had its' Pinewood Derby yesterday.

The scouts and their families prepared their cars, each fashioned from a block of pine, with wheels and axles attached.  Some were simply blocks with the axles and wheels shoved into the pre-cut guides.  Some were elegantly fashioned with electric saws.

The pack community rallied to pick up and return the track from the Long Beach Area Council's Will J Reid Scout Park.  Helped their and each other's scouts to get the cars ready before the race.  Nailing, screwing, applying transfers with each other's kids.  Brothers, sisters, parents, friends.

The Rewards

Some real scouting fun was in play.

Kids excitedly raced their hand-fashioned cars down the track.

Race after race, the scouts and their siblings were pitted against each other.  Friendly, but loud cheers for one scout or another, as cubmaster Jose Perez released the cars for each race.
