Delaney: $42,000 to Raise a Guide Dog

Learn more about where we got Delaney, the Guide Dogs of America!

I have already had quite a few inquiries about the organization that Delaney--the guide dog that my family is raising--is associated with. It is Guide Dogs of America.  Guide Dogs of America is a non- profit organization and is located in Sylmar, Ca.  Guide Dogs of America was founded over 60 years ago by a gentleman named of Joseph Jones who became blind at the age of 57.

Jones looked at all of his options, and decided a Guide Dog would benefit him the most.  He applied for one, and was turned down.   He then took matters into his own hands and, with the assistance of his employment, created a school to train Guide Dogs to assist the blind, called International Guiding Eyes.

In 1992, the name was changed to Guide Dogs of America.  Guide Dogs of America provides dogs and instruction in their use to the blind and visually impaired for free in the US and Canada.  Guide Dogs of America actually trains the blind person and the dog together at the campus for three weeks!  It costs approximately $42,000 to raise one Guide Dog.
