U.S. Water Polo Team Hangs On To 1st Wednesday

The women's Olympic team, including Long Beach's Lauren Wenger, ends in a tie with Spain but retain the lead in London games.

The United States women's water polo team, which includes Long Beach's Lauren Wenger and which trains in Los Alamitos, let a late lead slide as it tied Spain 9-9 Wednesday in its second Olympic match.

Coming off California player Maggie Steffens' Olympic record for scoring the most goals in a single match during the team's , the U.S. on Wednesday scored six of the first seven goals in the second half to take a 9-6 lead. But Spain scored three times in the final three minutes to tie the game at nine.

The are still in first place in their group and will play China in their final group match Friday.

The team by a score of 14-13. 

Wenger, 28, who stands 6'3", attended Wilson Classical High School, went on to University of Southen California, and she received the 2006 Peter J. Cutino Award as the best collegiate water polo player among Division I NCAA teams. She is considered able to play any position but goalkeeper.
