Long Beach Lifeguards Offer Summer Beach Tips

Safety precautions while in the water and on the sand can help prevent tragedy.

Long Beach Lifeguards encourage beach goers to think past the SPF factor of their sunblock and use common sense when visiting beaches this summer.

When swimming:

  • Always swim near an open lifeguard station
  • Never turn your back to the ocean
  • Never swim alone
  • Always watch small children even when lifeguards are nearby
  • When entering the the water, go in feet first to protect neck and head injuries. Avoid diving into unfamiliar waters.
  • Assess your swimming ability before using rafts, inner tubes, life jackets or other flotation devices.
  • Follow regulations and directions of lifeguards

While on the beach:

  • Do not litter
  • Never throw sand and always fill holes
  • Use caution when crossing bike paths
  • Dogs are only allowed on specified dog beaches
