Bay to Sizzle With July 3 Fireworks

Early start to Independence Day celebrations features fireworks, food and music

The rocket’s red glare won’t be by the dawn’s early light but instead by full moonlight as fireworks explode tonight (July 3) over Alamitos Bay.

McKenna’s On The Bay is hosting Big Bang on the Bay, an Independence Day celebration one day early. Organizer John Morris promises the fireworks over the water and under a full moon will offer a spectacular way to celebrate the nation’s birthday.

The fireworks start at 9 p.m. But the fun will begin earlier as McKenna’s hosts a block party from 6 to 10 p.m. at 190 N. Marina Dr., Long Beach. Here will be a battalion of food trucks with all-American, cross-cultural fare, from Korean BBQ and Asian foods to classic burgers. Bars will serve those of legal drinking age. Live music from a longtime Long Beach band, Flyer, will rock the crowd.

Admission to the block party is $20 for adults and free for kids under age 10. All proceeds from the block party will go toward Long Beach Fire Department, organizer Morris said.

But if it’s a free view of fireworks you’re seeking, get to Marina Drive and line up with the other viewers, he recommends. You can ride the Aqualink at 5:45 and 6 p.m. to Alamitos Bay for $5. Legends Sports Bar radio will be broadcasting the music to the fireworks show, and Morris hopes everyone will tune in, turn up their speakers and help simulcast the fireworks show as the bombs burst in air.
