Time Warner Cable To Broadcast High School Sports

The 15-year deal struck with CIF will allow games and features to be broadcast on cable television, Internet and mobile devices.

The California Interscholastic Federation, which legislates high school sports in the state, has reached an agreement with Time Warner Cable to become the official television distributor of the CIF Regionals and State Championship games in a number of sports.

The 15-year deal begins this school year and allows Time Warner to distribute high school sports programming on a number of platforms, including cable television, the Internet and mobile devices.

In 2011-12, a minimum of 60 games will be produced, and in subsequent years, at least 80 games will be shown. Time Warner Cable’s CIF sports programming will feature the regional and title games in numerous boys and girls sports, as well as profile pieces on student-athletes and coaches.

“Our agreement with CIF will provide high school sports fans in-depth opportunities to connect with teams, players, coaches, parents and fans across the state on multiple distribution platforms," said Barry Rosenblum, Time Warner Cable’s senior vice president for news and local programming.

CIF-Southern Section champions and often the runners-up in many sports advance to the Southern California Regionals against other section champs from about Bakersfield south, with the regional winner meeting the Northern California champions for the state title.

Time Warner Cable’s regional News and Local Programming Channel SoCal 101 already features a football game of the week (delayed for showing at midnight on Fridays) as well as several other programs highlighting high school sports. Currently, the focus is on L.A. and Orange County leagues, but will be expanded in the coming seasons.
