The Best Hook-up ... for Tuna

Bluefin tuna bite remains strong out of San Diego while albacore's been elusive but spotted on the Central Coast.

The San Diego tuna bite has been about as consistent as the stock market lately--one moment up and the next down again. Sportfishers continue to fish near the floating tuna pens being towed in the waters off Baja California Norte. There has been everything from mediocre fishing to excellent fishing for bluefin tuna in the 12 to 40-pound range.

Light line has given anglers a big advantage when fishing for tuna. Fifteen-pound test with a 20-pound fluorocarbon leader and a good lively bait results in lots more hook-ups. There has also been some big schools of yellowfin and bluefin tuna 150 miles southwest of San Diego. Whether this body of fish will move up is still anyone's guess.

The Central Coast is making some tuna news, too, as albacore are starting to bite there again. Morro Bay and surrounding areas are starting to catch a few more of the longfin tuna. Albacore all but missed Southern California anglers this year so many are anxious to see a run of the prized tuna no matter where they show up.

Some excellent surf fishing has still the rule from the Mexican border to the Channel Islands. Corbina, barred perch, halibut as well as some leopard sharks have also been in the mix.
