Free Food and Drink for Donating a Child's Toy

Our fishing columnist and a doctor co-host a toy drive and silent auction to fund fishing trips for kids. Here's your chance to meet CSI Miami's Rex Linn and get a picture with the Lakers Girls.

First, fishing. Rockfishing remained steady for most Southern California Landings and new rules have gone into effect. The size limit for lingcod was decreased from 24 inches to 22 inches. In addition, the lingcod season has been extended through December 31st. The Native Sun out of Long Beach Sportfishing took 3 nice lings on Tuesday on the local banks in addition to other bottom grabbers.

Bottom fishing has also been good out of Marina del Rey, Redondo and Palos Verdes. Santa Monica Bay anglers have been catching some lingcod, vermillion rockfish and lots of fine eating salmon grouper. There has also been some sand and calico bass being taken too.

Surface fishing, too, has been excellent. Carlos de los Santos caught a beautiful 42-lb. halibut last week out of Dana Wharf Sportfishing. Scott Buchert from Corona del Mar nailed a six-lb. sand bass on the Clemente out of Dana Wharf on last Tuesday. Captain Jeff Jones from Newport Beach has also had some excellent halibut fishing inside Long Beach Harbor this past week.

Orange County Police Helicopter pilot Tim Starn recently made his first private boater journey to Cedros Island in Northern Baja California. The over 600-mile round trip journey on his boat The Phoenix from Newport Beach was memorable in so many ways. “The fishing was epic,” said Starn. “We caught and released giant calico bass and had incredible yellowtail action. We got to meet and become friends with some of the local Baja panga anglers too.”

Starn and his friends fished near the San Diego long range sportfisher Qualifier 105 and could see they were catching lots of fish too. “I have been coming to Baja for many years and enjoy the people, the food and the great fishing.” The first trip to Baja for Starn by boat was a great success with no problems at all. Starn took advantage of purchasing diesel fuel at the Hotel Coral in Ensenada on the way home and save nearly $1 a gallon. “We took on over 1100 gallons so that move saved us a bunch,” he said.

Starn, a seasoned Baja traveler, not only loves traveling and fishing in Baja, but he likes the idea of contributing to the people of Baja. “Things are tough all over so coming here and spending some money in Baja just feels good. These are great people so it’s great to be able to contribute to the local economy,” he said.
