Long Beach Wilson, Poly Boys, Girls All Make CIF Basketball Playoffs

The Jackrabbits' boys and girls teams provide a 1-2 punch as they're seeded first and second in their CIF Division 1AA brackets.

Long Beach Poly’s boys basketball team was named the No. 1 seed in the CIF 1AA Division playoffs, it was announced Sunday. The Jackrabbits, champions of the Moore League, begin pursuit of the championship on Wednesday at 7 p.m., when they play host to Corona Santiago, an at-large playoff entry from the Big VIII League. A victorious Poly will face either Golden League champion Knight or 16th-seed Los Osos in the second round on Friday.

Wilson, the No. 4 team from the Moore League, opens the playoffs on the road at fourth-seeded Etiwanda, champion of the Baseline League. If the Bruins can pull off the upset, they will play either Chino Hills or Lawndale Leuzinger in the second round.

Long Beach Poly’s girls team earned the No. 2 seeding in the 1AA playoffs. The Moore League champs will host Los Osos, the No. 3 team from the Baseline League, on Thursday at 7 PM. A victory will pit the Jackrabbits against either Desert Sky champion Silverado or 16th-seeded Eastvale Roosevelt in Saturday’s second round.

Wilson’s girls, who took third place in the Moore League, will play their 1AA first round game Thursday at 7 p.m. at fourth-seeded Moreno Valley Canyon Springs, champion of the Inland Valley League. Should the Bruins advance, they will square off against either Pacific View League champion Oxnard Pacifica or 13th-seeded Lynwood in Saturday’s second round.

Quarterfinal and semifinal games for boys and girls will be held next week, with championship games in all divisions scheduled on March 2-5. Championships in most divisions will be held at the Anaheim Arena, with the only exceptions being the 5AA, 5A, 6AA and 6A games, which will be contested at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana.
