The San Diego Sockers got two goals 13 seconds apart in the third quarter Sunday night and were able to hold off a late rally to defeat the Ontario Fury 6-5 at Citizens Business Bank Arena.

San Diego’s Kraig Chiles and Eddie Velez hit two perfect strikes into the Ontario net, taking the wind out of the sails of the host Fury, who had been controlling much of the action in the period.

Ontario rallied with two goals in the fourth quarter as Tino Nunez scored his 13th goal of the season early in the frame on a perfect flick pass from Jhonatan Bravo. Nunez returned the favor, setting up Bravo with 3:29 remaining to make it 6-5. But the Sockers were able to turn away wave after wave of Ontario attacks to close out the game.

Reymundo Reza had a pair of first half goals for the Sockers, as they led 4-2 at the intermission. Chiles, San Diego’s leading scorer, had a pair of assists to go with his goal in the victory. Chad Hagerty and Jeff Hughes also scored for San Diego. Goaltender Chris Toth was instrumental in the victory, picking up 12 saves in the match.

Nunez led the Ontario attack, scoring twice and adding the assist. Ontario also got goals from Luis Piffer and Mikel Palmerin.

Sunday was also Scout Night hosted by the Fury. Boy and Girl Scouts from across the region were allowed to march on the field before the game. They also helped take donations of goods that will be given to the USO for troops stationed overseas.

With the victory, San Diego all but wrapped up a Pacific Division playoff berth, as they prepare to head to Mexico for back-to-back games against Rancho Seco Saltillo and the Monterrey Flash.

Ontario will be off until Feb. 1, when they play host to the Turlock Express at 7 p.m. at Citizens Business Bank Arena.
