Fuel Economy Helps Muscle Milk Win ALMS Race Again

Two pit stops squeezed into one caution period turned bad luck into good Saturday in the sixth running of the American Le Mans Series on the streets of Long Beach.

The strategy—mostly born out of necessity—made a winner of Klaus Graf and Lucas Luhr, helping them become the race's first back-to-back winner in the P1 class.

After 86 laps around the 11-turn, 1.698-mile layout, they are now tied for the series lead with second-place finisher Chris Dyson and Guy Smith after two of 10 races.

The Muscle Milk Honda Performance Development ARX-03a lost the lead during a caution period when it had fuel issues during the driver change. Before the caution ended, it stopped again to top off, and that was enough to get through the final 56 minutes of the two-hour timed race without having to pit again for fuel.

Other winners included Oreca's Alex Papow and Ryan Dalziel, third overall after completing 85 laps, in Prototype Challenge; Corvette Racing's Tommy Milner and Oliver Gavin, who finished sixth overall and completed 84 laps in GT; Honda Performance Development ARX-03b's Scott Tucker and Christophe Bouchut, who finished 10th overall and ran 83 laps in Prototype 2; and Peter Lasaffre and Damien Faulkner, who completed 79 laps in GT Challenge and finished 23rd overall in a Porsche 911.
