CBS announced today that Stephen Colbert of Comedy Central's The Colbert Report will take over for David Letterman on Late Night when the latter retires next year.

Forbes reports Colbert will be leaving behind his right-wing persona he adopted for his cable channel show.

When Letterman first announced his retirement last week, Los Angeles Eric Garcetti publicly asked CBS to move the popular program from New York to Los Angeles. No word on that, although New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio didn't take to kindly to the invitation

I really wanted to see a female break through that glass ceiling. There are plenty to choose from who would have been perfect. Colbert came out of left field for me. I'm sure that salary played a huge part in the decision. Nevertheless, Colbert is funny, intelligent and I'm happy for him. The Jimmy's may not be thrilled.

I tend to agree, mimi. Tina Fey would have been as good as Colbert. Joan Rivers would have been perfect once Johnny was ousted (not so much now), but then he blackballed her. Incidentally, Colbert's contract is not cheap. He probably makes more than Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel or Conan.

great point...as great as Colbert is, and he is a Titan of comedy, Tina might have even been better.... I feel like she wouldn't take that gig anyways....but I could be wrong.....how refreshing it would have been to have Tina Fey...hosting a late night show...... my guess is that Colbert takes lots of market share from Kimmel and Fallon....I don't think (my opinions) those guys can carry his laundry...
