Photo Gallery: 400 Girls Shown Marvels of Engineering

College of Engineering at CSULB offers a day of workshops aimed at attracting middle and high school girls earlier to the field. Hands-on fun includes engineering students' projects. Rocket anyone?

About 400 middle and high school girls attended Cal State Long Beach's 11th annual "Women Engineers at the Beach,'' and some of them were in awe of older students' projects. Among those on display: a Formula-one racecar, an off-road vehicle, a concrete canoe, and a rocket. NASA and Fluor Corp. sponsored the event, along with a list of others. The girls, as you will see, learned the force of currents, how to build the best paper airplane, how to use paper towels to build things, buoancy and other concepts. The all-day conference seeks to educate girls about the future prospects in jobs and innovation that they tend to discover much later than do boys. Check out our photo gallery to see what they saw.
