New Cal State University Chancellor Named

Head of UC Riverside will take charge of the 23-campus CSU system, it was announced.

UC Riverside Chancellor Timothy P. White was named Thursday the chancellor of the 23-campus California State University system. White will succeed Charles B. Reed, who announced his retirement plans in May. Reed has been CSU chancellor of the Long Beach-based system for 14 years.

``I am humbled to have been chosen to lead the California State University system at such a transformative time,'' White said. ``As chancellor, I look forward to engaging with faculty, students, staff, campus presidents and CSU trustees, along with the communities we serve, as we advance this vital system of higher education for California's future.''

White, 63, has been UC Riverside's chancellor since 2008. He was president of the University of Idaho from 2004 to 2008 and previously served as a dean, provost, executive vice president and interim president of Oregon State University.

The Argentina native was a professor and chair of the Department of Human Biodynamics at UC Berkeley and a professor and chair at the Department of Movement Science and a research scientist at the Institute of Gerontology at the University of Michigan.

``Tim White's background and experience reflect the institutional values and mission of the CSU,'' said Bob Linscheid, chairman of the CSU Board of Trustees. ``His demonstrated leadership and commitment to student success are the right combination for the university's future.''

Cal. tips to successfully fail Californians.Let’s review how Cal. senior management has used additional funding. UC Berkeley Chancellor Birgeneau ($450,000), Provost Breslauer ($306,000) pick the pockets of in-state students and their parents clean. Birgeneau’s, Provost’s tuition increases make public Cal. the # 1 ranked most expensive for in-state students (during the greatest recession of modern times). Cal. is more expensive than Harvard College. B&B’s outrageous 14% annual tuition increases (2006 – 20012) provide a shocking picture of out of touch, self-serving senior management. Robert J Birgeneau and Provost have forgotten they are public servants, stewards of the public money, not overseers of their own fiefdom. Let’s review how B&B have handled the tax dollars they currently get. Pay ex-politician $300,000 for several lectures; Recruit affluent foreign & affluent out of state students who then displace qualified instate applicants; Spend millions (prominent East Coast university accomplishing same at 0 cost) for OE consultants to remove Chancellor, Provost created inefficiencies but prevent consultants from examining senior management. Sack clueless Provost George Breslauer. Wasteful Chancellor Birgeneau resigned. Email opinion marsha.kelman@ucop.edu Calif. State Senators Assembly Members (The author has 35 years’ consulting, has taught at Cal. where he observed the culture & ways of senior management & was not fired)
