Long Beach State Jazz Ensemble Wins Top Downbeat Magazine Awards

The nation's most prestigious student jazz music awards are bestowed on Cal State Long Beach's Jazz Ensemble and students.

The student Jazz Ensemble at Cal State University, Long Beach, has won three big awards from Downbeat Magazine, a leading national jazz publication.

“These are the most significant awards in collegiate jazz," Carolyn Bremer, chair of the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music, said in an announcement.  "It is a huge honor and a reflection of the depth of our jazz area that we have won three this year.”

For the third year in a row, Pacific Standard Time, directed by Christine Guter, was recognized as the nation’s best Large Vocal Jazz Ensemble at the graduate college level.  Miko Shudo, a Pacific Standard Time member, was also awarded Outstanding Performance for Undergraduate Vocal Jazz Soloist. Besides singing, CSULB instrumentalist and composer Brendan Doshi won the top prize for Outstanding Graduate Original Composition – Lead Sheet category for his tune titled “Vulture.”
