Leadership Long Beach will recognize the graduates of the Institute’s Class of 2012 on Monday, June 18 at 6 pm at the Hotel Maya, 700 Queensway Drive, with their Graduation Ceremony. The class of 23 members reflects a varied group of industries, experiences and resources, mirroring the diverse city that Long Beach is. With their community service projects and an allegiance to Long Beach, Leadership Long Beach has added to the human capital of principled leadership and community engagement. The program includes a 5 pm reception and 6 pm Projects Presentation, which are free and open to the public; the dinner and graduation ceremony begins at 7 pm and costs $50 per person.
The Class of 2012 began their year in August 2011 starting with an orientation day at Rancho Los Alamitos and concluding with a community welcome reception attended by Mayor Bob Foster and with a scholarship tribute from the classmates of the late Mark Bixby (LLBI ’96). Over the next nine months, monthly sessions took place at Long Beach City College, Port of Long Beach, City Hall, the offices of Long Beach Community Action Partnership, and at a mountain camp retreat site in Big Bear, with the participants getting information on key issues and challenges facing the city from community leaders, experts and concerned citizens.
The Institute sessions also included the values and qualities of principled leadership, teamwork and collaborative processes. From these interactive and informational sessions, the participants created four group service projects (BKindLB, Community Emergency Response Training, Career Day for LBUSD Male and Female Academies, and LLB Marketing Programs) to address needs and putting into practice their skills and talents to benefit Long Beach. Like many of the 100 service projects completed by previous classes, these projects are expected to continue to serve the community beyond their class graduation.
