CSULB Freshmen, Transfer Applications Top 80,000

The number of applicants sets a record for Cal State Long Beach.

Cal State Long Beach has set a new record for itself by having more than 80,000 applications for the Fall 2013 semester from first-time freshmen and transfers.

CSULB also collected more applications than any of the other 22 CSU campuses. There were 80,622 applications from domestic students alone, and 82,026 applications with international students included.

There was a 2.6 percent increase among freshmen compared to last year, and transfer applicants jumped 18.5 percent.

"At a time when many peple are questioning the value of a college or univeristy degree, students and parents apparently and increasingly recognize the value of a Cal State Long Beach education," said CSULB President F. King Alexander in a prepared statement. "Our applicant pool is once again among the nation's largest due to the fact that we continue to provide a high quality and affordale educational experience at a time when many institutions cannot make this statement."

Based on the high number of applicants, enrollment continues to be difficult at CSULB. University officials said they anticipate enrolling 4,000 new first-time freshmen and 3,000 transfer students for the Fall 2013 semester.
