UPDATE: Cal State Long Beach Faculty Picket

Professors, coaches and other of the 2,000 faculty at the university carry signs saying, "We Teach the 99%" and are protesting CSU decisions to pay hiring bonuses to some presidents while they can't get .04% increase.

Updated with numbers of picketers and strike vote.

As students flooded into campus and commuters honked and passed by en route to freeways, about 200 faculty members from Cal State University, Long Beach demonstrated from 7:45a.m. to 10 a.m. outside the main campus entrance Thursday morning, filling crosswalks. It was what an Asian Studies professor (tenured) called an informational picket, in which union members make the public aware of their situation. The Cal State University system Chancellor's Office has said that while the faculty salary request seems relatively small at .04%, it adds up to $20 million the system does not have. The California Faculty Assn.'s field staff, Tom Pinkava, said the board of the union, which represents 23,000 faculty in the Cal State system, had taken a strike vote Nov. 7 and authorized a one-day strike, which CSULB faculty will attend at the Cal State Dominguez Hills campus in Carson Nov. 17.
