Applicant Pool Increases at CSULB
The fall 2012 application period came to a close Monday, and CSULB has seen another dramatic increase in applications received.
The number of first-time freshman applicants continues to swell at Cal State Long Beach, as the university saw a nearly 10 percent increase in students hoping to be admitted as freshmen in Fall 2012.
Monday marked the end of fall 2012 application period, with CSULB receiving 54,086 applications from graduating high school seniors, an increase of 4,848 applications from fall 2011.
CSULB president F. King Alexander commented that the increase in the applicant pool signals the success of academic programs offered at the university.

“At a time when many people are questioning the value of a college degree, these numbers validate the value of a Cal State Long Beach education,” said CSULB President F. King Alexander. “We have one the nation’s largest applicant pools, and parents and students understand the value of the education that we offer.”
However, Alexander also addressed the fact that a larger applicant pool does not necessarily denote more student admissions.

“Unfortunately,” the president added, “we have a state legislature that will only allow a small fraction of these students to attend our campus because they would rather incarcerate than educate California’s citizens.”
Cumulative, CSULB received 75,132 applications from high school and transfer students, seeking admission for fall 2012. That is an eight percent increase from last year’s total of 69,317 applications.
The over 75,000 applications received by CSULB is more than the amount received at any of the other 22 CSU campuses for fall 2012 admission.
