60,000 Long Beach Students Leave School Today

A majority of LBUSD's 86,000 pupils are out for summer after graduation ceremonies, and about one quarter of its principals will say goodbye and head for new campuses.

Today marks the final day of classes for Belmont Shore and Naples students of Long Beach Unified School District. That means 60,000 in traditional school year schools will be out for summer vacation. In Belmont Shore, that means about 2,200 students end their grades at just Lowell and Naples elementaries, and at Rogers Middle School. (Year-round schools will close in July).

The joy will burn brightly among proud parents and students, beaming grandparents and family friends. Due to crippling state budget cuts, today will be bittersweet for thousands in the Shore, including many of the roughly 500 teachers  LBUSD has notified will lose their jobs.

Those that survived the millions in budget cuts will be facing new fronts. About 25% of the district's principals will be moving to new campuses, Superintendent Christopher Steinhauser said Wednesday.
