Sascha Bos to Fellow Teenagers: Movie Time

To my fellow teenagers: going to the movies in Long Beach is a special treat if you hit my favorite places.

The Art Theatre, Long Beach's own historic single-screen, is the place to catch an indie flick in a stylish environment. Match the theatre's art deco architecture with a vintage dress from one of the many thrift stores lining retro row, then head over to Number Nine for calamari, bún, and a glass of lychee iced tea. Once you've eaten, cross the street and enjoy the show! For a post-movie discussion, try some gelato or a cup of coffee at Portfolio Annex, right next to the theatre (open 'til 9). Or if your movie finishes late, walk down the street to the original Portfolio (closes at 11). In addition to its regular showings, the Art Theatre hosts a ton of special events (like sing-a-longs, Q & A's with moviemakers, and live shows), so sign up for their newsletter to stay informed.

Moonlight Movies on the Beach start July 5th and end August  31st. Check out the schedule to see a fun movie on the sand. Be sure to bring folding chairs, blankets, pillows, and a delicious picnic (I'm planning on heading to for the fresh mozzarella, a baguette, and ladyfingers I'll need for caprese sandwiches and tiramisu). One thing to remember: use the restroom before the movie.

I couldn't write an article about going to the movies without including the awesome United Artists Marketplace 6. This place shows a ton of independent films and has great vibes - it's often decorated and you can usually score free movie posters. The screens are small and the theatre is usually very quiet. Yummy eating options include the nearby outposts of Ruby's, In-N-Out, and Wahoo's, but I usually just like to get a big bag of popcorn mixed with M&M's (try it!).
