The 405 to Shut Down Completely for Several Hours

The freeway will close down entirely from midnight to 5 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday for work on the $277M project. Here are detours for Long Beach drivers.

The San Diego Freeway (I-405) will be completely closed down Wednesday and Thursday nights following several evenings of partial closures.

From midnight to 5 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday nights, both directions of the freeway will be shut down between Valley View Street and Seal Beach Boulevard as part of the Orange County Transportation Authority’s three-and-a-half-year, $277-million West County Connector Project.

Drivers heading north on the I-405 should exit Westminster Boulevard, head west, making a right on Seal Beach Boulevard to the 405.  Drivers heading south on the I-405 should exit Seal Beach Boulevard, turning left onto Seal Beach Boulevard and then left onto Westminster Boulevard, to the I-405.

It’s the first time the freeway will be entirely closed for the project, but partial closures also will create traffic headaches for nighttime drivers throughout the next week.

  • From Sunday through Thursday, four lanes on each side of the San Diego (405) between Westminster Boulevard and Seal Beach Boulevard will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. At least one lane will be open on each side of the freeway, but expect the lane reductions to slow down the flow of traffic significantly.
  • Two lanes on the Garden Grove (22) Freeway from Goldenwest Street to the 405 will also be close Sunday through Thursday from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • The southbound westbound 22 to the northbound 405 connector will be entirely closed from midnight to 5 a.m. from Sunday through Thursday.
  •  The southbound 405 to the eastbound 22 connector will also be closed Sunday through Thursday from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • The 405 Seal Beach Boulevard north bound off ramp and southbound onramp will be closed Sunday through Thursday from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
