Lowenthal Hosts Obama Birthday Party at Bixby Park

Congressional candidate for the 47th District of Long Beach, Los Alamitos and other Orange County cities invites the public to celebrate the President's birthday with refreshments, speakers.

The Alan Lowenthal for Congress campaign is inviting the public to a rally and celebration of President Barack Obama's birthday at noon Saturday at Bixby Park's Band Shell. It's located at Ocean Boulevard and Cherry Avenue.

Lowenthal, a Democratic state senator from Long Beach, is vying for the newly created 47th U.S. Congressional District, for which he is running against Long Beach City Councilman and Republican Gary DeLong. On Friday, DeLong, who would be termed out of his city council office in 2014, fired off his weekly e-mail attacking Lowenthal, who will be termed out in 2012, playing partisan politics, and Lowenthal's campaign called the weekly letters the height of partisan gridlock he claims to eschew.

DeLong's e-mail cast a Thursday candidate forum hosted by Long Beach Rotary Club on the Queen Mary as a place where Lowenthal was divisive, but Patch attended and both candidates at the lunch event seemed very civilized. Attendees praised both candidates, in fact, for the lack of sniping.  They said the candidates' positions are largely well known, but do tend to fall under their party's agenda.

“This campaign is for the community, by the community,” said Senator Alan Lowenthal, the front-runner in the 47th Congressional District race, “The rally  kicks off the campaign for this critical election, one that offers a choice to voters: returning to the policies of the past, or continuing forward with a Democratic agenda."

Food and refreshments will be provided, and attendees are kindly asked to RSVP to info@alanlowenthal.com or by calling the campaign office at (562) 594-4300. The rally will begin at 12:00pm on Saturday, August 4th in Bixby Park.

Senator Alan Lowenthal is a College Professor and State Senator who has lived in Southern California for more than 40 years. Senator Lowenthal has been active in improving our neighborhoods for decades, starting as a community psychology professor at CSU Long Beach, a founding member of several community improvement organizations, and then a respected bipartisan member of the state legislature."

The story corrects the year that DeLong will be termed out of his City Council office.
