Rep. Alan Lowenthal announced Monday that he is giving up his paycheck until all federal employees working during the shutdown receive their pay.
Members of Congress are eligible to receive their monthly paychecks during the federal government shutdown, but all other federal employees will not be paid. Many members of congress have given up their paychecks.
"I had sincerely hoped we could avoid an irresponsible government shutdown by passing a reasonable solution to fund the government," said Lowenthal, a Democrat from Long Beach.
"I refuse to accept my paycheck until federal employees who must work during the shutdown are paid. I am proud to stand with the hardworking federal employees of my district and across the nation by ensuring that I am treated no differently in this situation."
Lowenthal represents California's 47th district, which includes Long Beach, Belmont Shore, Naples, Los Alamitos and Rossmoor.
