Long Beach Moves to Ban Music From Parked Ice Cream Trucks

The Long Beach City Council Tuesday night unanimously approved a proposal to ban operators of ice cream trucks from playing amplified music to attract children while they are serving up cones and other frozen treats.

Long Beach City Council member Dee Andrews wants the City Attorney's Office to draft an ordinance that would require ice cream truck operators to comply with the city's noise ordinance and prevent the playing of any music when the trucks are parked and the operator is vending ice cream.

"Currently, there are no laws on the books regulating the trucks from playing music while they are parked,'' Andrews said.

Andrews said noise from ice cream trucks is becoming more of a nuisance in the mid-city area of Long Beach, with music from the vehicles heard throughout the day and into the evening, and the number of trucks steadily increasing.

The City Attorney's Office will have 30 days to return with a draft ordinance. Deputy City Attorney Amy Webber told the Long Beach Press-Telegram that Santa Ana, Fullerton, Anaheim and other cities have passed laws restricting music from ice cream trucks, while Costa Mesa has completely banned amplified music from the vehicles.
