Long Beach Council Now Weighing Police and Fire Academies

The budgeted funds by each agency may instead be used to pay current police officers and make improvements on fire stations.

The Long Beach City Council is, at 6:30 p.m., discussing whether to cancel police and fire recruit academies this year. The Long Beach Police Department has currently budgeted $1,527,966 for its academy and The Long Beach Fire Department has budgeted $977,328 for its academy.

If the City Council approves the agenda item, the money would go to pay salaries of current police officers, as well as to fund fire station improvements.

The City Council meeting is underway in the Council Chambers at 333 W. Ocean Blvd.
