Long Beach Council Chooses 1st Latino Vice Mayor

The Council selected Robert Garcia to serve for the two year rotation.

Long Beach City Councilman Robert Garcia was chosen by the rest of the City Council to serve as vice mayor Tuesday evening. A two-year service, Garcia will step in for any absence by Mayor Bob Foster. He succeeds Council Member Suja Lowenthal.

At age 34, Garcia is the youngest person and the first Latino to have served as vice mayor, his office said in announcing the selection.

Garcia's office released the following statement, in part:

"I love Long Beach, and am honored and grateful to serve as Vice Mayor,” said Garcia. “I want to thank all my colleagues for entrusting me with this responsibility, and I look forward to working with all of them to build a stronger city."

Garcia, who teaches and serves as a college administrator at Long Beach City College, was elected in 2009 in a special election, and then re-elected to a full four-year term in 2010.
