Long Beach Celebrates Veterans Day

Celebrations of American vets, including a parade attended by people from many parts of Southern California, plus details on public school closures on Monday.

Veterans Day is on Sunday and there will be a couple of celebrations in Long Beach over the weekend to mark the holiday. And yes, kids and parents and teachers, LBUSD schools are closed on Monday, Nov. 12.

On Sunday, Nov. 11, the Long Beach VA Hospital and Healthcare System will be holding a “welcome home” celebration for Veterans Day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.. The address is 5901 East 7th St. Long Beach, Calif. There will be live entertainment, a kids area, free food, veteran’s affairs booths, a ferris wheel, a petting zoo, Harley’s Heroes vans and flu shots.

On Monday, Nov. 12, the entire Long Beach Unified School District will be closed along with the Cal State Long Beach campus.

On Saturday, Nov. 10, the 16th annual Long Beach Veterans Day Parade took place from 10 am to 4 pm. The parade started and ended at Houghton Park.

Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske went to the parade with six nurses from the Veterans Administration Hospital. The six nurses, Yvonne Ginez-Gonzales, Robert Kotecki, Kang Kim, Lisa Lobdell, Ruth Likout and Sung Hong, will be road in the parade with Schipske, according to a press release from the city of Long Beach.
