DeLong to Speak at Residents Meeting

Some $18M in Unexpected Tidelands Funds to be spent in coastal districts 3 and 2 and will be the topic at the monthly Belmont Shore Residents Assn. session.

Third District Council Member Gary DeLong will attend the monthly Thursday evening meeting of the Belmont Shore Residents Assn. to discuss $18 Million in Tideland funds that may be spent in the community's coastal areas.

The BSRA announced Saturday that DeLong will discuss residents' ideas for how the oil revenue funds should be reinvested or spent in the tidelands areas, which are defined as property the public owns along the coast. The funds, which DeLong said Saturday amount to $18 million, must be spent in the tidal areas that are in the 3rd (Belmont Shore) and 2nd (Bluff Park, Alamitos Beach) council districts of the city.

DeLong said that he was invited by BSRA President Aileen Colon to attend the meeting and discuss possible projects on which to spend the money. It is not his first visit to the monthly residents meeting.

"An additional $18 million dollars in oil revenues have been identified," DeLong said in an e-mail.  "However, the money must remain in the Tidelands area."

Colon said Saturday that she'd heard DeLong speak at the June 3rd District lunch meeting he holds and DeLong had brought up some various projects that might be funded.

Also attending Thursday's meeting will be Tom Modica, Director of Government Affairs and Strategic Initiatives in the City Manager's Office.

Some of the possible projects under discussion include replacement of the
Leeway Sailing Center, improving or rebuilding the Beach area rest rooms,
and constructing a new path on the sand adjacent to the existing path, to
separate pedestrians from bicycles.

DeLong and Modica will also answer questions from the audience, said Jeff Miller of the BSRA  board.

All residents of Belmont Shore are invited to attend the BSRA's monthly
