Beach closures in Long Beach were lifted today by the city's interim health official, who, nonethelesss, suggested that the public avoid the beaches for at least 72 hours because of today's significant rain.
Dr. Mauro Torno said there was no indication that the ocean waters along Long Beach were contaminated. Torno had ordered the closures after a sewage spill of 12,000 gallons entered the Los Angeles River from Compton on Saturday.
Torno said Long Beach officials were planning on contacting their counterparts from Compton to ask what the plans are to prevent such sewage spills in the future. The water will be monitored on a weekly basis, Torno said.
