A man is on life support after jumping from the Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier in Long Beach shortly after noon Sunday, authorities said.

The man crossed the rail before jumping into the water, according to witness Vicky Gomez of Norwalk.

"He went down like a bullet," she said, adding that he did not surface until he was rescued by lifeguards and divers about 10 minutes later.

The 911 caller told authorities that the man was wearing a backpack when he went into the water.

Lifeguards, fire engines and paramedics from the Long Beach Fire Department, as well as a Long Beach Police Boat, quickly responded to the 911 call, according to a news release from the Long Beach Police Department. Lifeguards performed quick rescue dives until the Public Safety Dive Team arrived and entered the water with scuba gear.

Police divers pulled the man from the water at about 12:12 p.m., according to the LBPD.

Divers also recovered the man's backpack, which was filled with sand.

Emergency personnel were seen pulling the man into a boat and doing chest compressions until he was loaded onto a waiting ambulance on the pier and transported to a local hospital, where he was put on life support.
