Though most of the high school's 4,300 students had left the campus, Wilson was briefly locked down--nobody allowed in or out--for the few hundred people remaining there; a junior varsity football game was paused until the school got the all-clear, Long Beach Unified School District spokesman Chris Eftychiou said.

"The suspect fled on foot and officers believe he is contained in an apartment complex in the area of 10th Street and Grand Ave," Fernandez said by e-mail. "The search for the shooter continues and the investigation is currently ongoing. Nnothing more that can be released at this time."

Original report:

Wilson High School was briefly on lockdown--no one in, no one out-- from about 3:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. today after reports of shots fired in the neighborhood, Long Beach Unified School District confirmed.

"My understanding is that the shooting happenend about a half mile from the school at 10th and Grand,"  said LBUSD spokesman Chris Eftychiou.

Early reports indicated that the shooting might have occured closer to the campus and the police investigation was underway.

"School had already let out earlier, but we still had several hundred students on campus for after-school activities," said Eftychiou.  "A JV football game was temporarily halted as a precaution but soon resumed."

Long Beach Police Sgt. Rico Fernandez told LBReport.com that a male fired one shot at a group of males and, standing nearby, females, and that no one was struck. Police set up a perimeter through which nobody could pass, and detained two males for questioning, said Fernandez, spokesman for the Long Beach Police Department.
