Toddler Fights For Life in Long Beach Hospital

Homicide detectives suspect the boyfriend of the boy's babysitter assaulting the boy, causing blunt force trauma, authorities said.

A 23-year-old Norwalk man was arrested today on suspicion of beating a 2-year-old boy who is on the verge of dying in a Long Beach hospital.

Deputies from the sheriff's Norwalk Station responded to a "baby not breathing" call at 12:50 p.m. Sunday in the 11400 block of Maza Street in Norwalk, according to sheriff's homicide detectives. The boy was unresponsive and is now at Miller's Children Hospital Long Beach in extremely critical condition.

Homicide detectives learned that Elder Matamoros, 23, the boyfriend of the boy's babysitter, is suspected of assaulting the boy, causing blunt force trauma.

Matamoros has been charged with cruelty to a child likely to produce great bodily injury or death and is being held on $100,000 bail.
